Happy Hour: March Reminders

March 21, 2014 by Jon

Welcome to the end of the week and another edition of Happy Hour! Just sit back, relax, and enjoy your end of the week roundup of all things interesting in the land of money.

March Reminders

The hopes and dreams of a perfect $1 Billion Bracket is all but lost thanks to Dayton’s upset of Ohio St. That game knocked out 80% of the participants. Sadly, I was one of them. While you toil away tracking your NCAA brackets, here’s a few things you can do between games.

Tax Savings

Today is the last day to squeeze in some extra savings if you need more than the free eFile from Turbotax. Starting 3/22/14, the federal eFile is still free, but the prices go up on the paid tax software products. We’re less than a month away from the tax deadline.

There’s still time to get some last-minute money into an IRA before the deadline too. Use a sign up bonus to open a new IRA.

Health Care

The health care enrollment deadline is March 31. I covered the Affordable Care Act earlier. Anyone who doesn’t have insurance or wants to change their current insurance must be enrolled by the deadline to avoid the penalty. That penalty for 2014 is $95 or 1% of your income, whichever is bigger. The $95 doesn’t sound too bad, it’s the 1% that hurts.
